Shikokho Mission

Since 1989, the Chevy Chase Presbyterian Church has been in partnership with the village of Shikokho in Kakamega County, Kenya. The village faces several challenges, including poverty, land shortage and lack of municipal services.   The partnership has included the building, staffing and supply of a medical clinic in the village, provision of access to electricity, the drilling of a water well and a water distribution system, support for women in economic development, and support for the Shikokho primary and secondary schools.  Over the years, many members of the congregation have traveled to Shikokho to work with our partners there.

Currently, CCPC assists the people of Shikokho through three programs. The Feeding Program provides 160 pre-school and primary school students at risk with a hot meal every school day, alleviating food shortages and hunger in the village. Within the  Shikokho Primary School, CCPC pays the salaries of four teachers to support smaller classroom sizes and consistent education for children in Shikokho. Finally, each year, CCPC provides about 60 students at the Shikokho Secondary School with partial tuition scholarships to attend secondary school based on school performance and need.
