Clair Price Rozier Memorial Concerts presents Vivian Chen, Pianist

This piano recital is presented to honor the memory of Clair Price Rozier, gifted pianist and teacher, and long-time Friday Morning Music Club Member (FMMC), who passed away at the age of 93 in January 2021.

Canadian pianist Vivian Chen is currently based in Tel Aviv, Israel where she is pursuing an artist diploma under the guidance of Arie Vardi. Most recently, she was awarded the First Prize and Audience Prize in the Washington International Piano Competition in 2021 which culminated into her solo recital debut in the Kennedy Center and a performance of Beethoven’s 2nd Piano Concerto with Pablo Saelzer and the Avanti Orchestra. Other recent highlights include winning First Prize in the Ottawa Chamberfest 2021 Rising Stars Competition, Second Prize in the Orchestra 914 Concerto Competition, (with whom she performed the Ravel Concerto in G Major) and Third Prize in the 2022 Prix Ravel sponsored by the Ravel Foundation in France. Vivian obtained her master's degree in piano performance from the University of Michigan, where she studied with Christopher Harding, and her bachelor's degree from the University of Toronto, where she studied with Lydia Wong. While she was there, she performed in Weill Recital Hall as her Carnegie Hall debut in 2017 and with the University of Toronto’s Symphony Orchestra as a winner of the Concerto Competition in her sophomore year. Vivian was also awarded first prize at the national-level Canadian Music Competition (2016), second prize in the Mississauga Symphony Concerto Competition (2015), and the bronze prize in the Vancouver International Music Competition (2017). She has collaborated with orchestras such as the York Symphony Orchestra in 2018, the Georgian Bay orchestra in 2019 and hopes to work with more in the future. Her favorite part of being a pianist is the opportunity to connect with people from all over the world both with the piano and away from it.

Clair Price Rozier completed a master’s degree in piano accompanying in 1965 from American University, wrote a thesis on piano pedagogy, and maintained a busy private piano teaching studio for over five decades. During her tenure as Director of the FMMC Foundation from 1981-1985, Clair chaired the FMMC-sponsored Washington International Competitions, which have launched the careers of many legendary musicians over its history.

For over 52 years Chevy Chase Concerts has offered admission-free concerts to the community because of a belief that music nourishes our minds and souls and speaks deeply to us in ways that words alone often cannot.

We have offered a wide variety of programs, primarily by professional musicians, the whole being supported entirely by donations from our church members and listening community as well as freewill offerings which are received at most concerts.

A Washington, D.C. institution, the annual Bach Marathon celebrates the music of Johann Sebastian Bach played by some of the area’s finest organists on the magnificent 3 manual, 50 rank, 2500 pipe, glass-encased Rieger tracker organ, built in 1975 and ideally suited to the music of Bach.

Currently, masking is optional.
